Simone Biles has forever changed the sport of gymnastics. Among her athletic accomplishments since the 2016 Olympics Games: she won her sixth world all-around title in 2023, won two medals at the 2020 Olympics, has five skills named after her, and landed a Yurchenko double pike vault in competition. At the 2020 Olympics in Tokyo, Simone dared to put herself first and has catapulted mental health to the forefront of conversations about elite athletes.
Simone wrote a bestselling autobiography in late 2016 and, in 2018, we got to relive her incredible journey to the 2016 Olympics with her Lifetime biopic. In 2021, we got to witness her athletic and personal journey training for an extra year to Tokyo with her docuseries Simone Vs Herself.
In 2019, Simone was named Sportswoman of the Year at the Laureus World Sports Awards for the second time.
In 2021, after the Olympics, Simone led the Athleta-sponsored Gold Over America Tour, which gymnasts from WHGF Harlem and WHGF Detroit in the audience cheering her on! Plus, WHGF Harlem athletes got a special surprise visit from Simone herself at an Athleta photo shoot (see video above).
Simone has more Worlds medals (30) and Worlds gold medals (23) than any other gymnast in history, and she’s still going. Her achievements and her bravery have set a new bar for athletes, and her legacy will impact generations of gymnasts to come.
